What Is a Signal Chain?

The Standard Order
The widely accepted standard places compression, wah, and overdrive pedals at the start of the chain, modulation effects such as chorus, flanger, and phaser in the middle, and time based effects, delay and reverb, at the end. The logic behind this order comes down to what each effect does to the signal and how those effects interact with each other. Dynamics and filtering work best on a clean, natural guitar signal. Drive and distortion reshape that signal fundamentally. Modulation adds movement and texture to the shaped sound. Time based effects then place that complete sound in a space; a delay or reverb reflecting the full processed tone, not just the raw guitar.
Tuner and Dynamics First
A tuner pedal goes first in the chain, before any other effect. That way the tuner reads your guitar's pure signal rather than a processed one; a drive or compression pedal makes accurate tuning harder for the tuner to detect. Placing the tuner first also lets you mute your signal completely (most tuner pedals silence the output when active) between songs without touching anything else.
Compression and noise gate pedals typically come right after the tuner. Compressors even out the dynamic range of your playing, reducing peaks and raising quieter notes to create a more consistent level. Placing compression before drive pedals means the compressor works on your natural guitar signal, which gives it more predictable behavior. A compressor placed after a drive pedal would be compressing the already clipped, harmonically dense distorted signal, which produces a different and less natural result.
Drive Pedals and Why Their Placement Matters
Overdrive, distortion, and fuzz pedals, the drive family, come after dynamics and before modulation. These effects fundamentally reshape the guitar's waveform: they clip it, add harmonics, and increase sustain. Drive pedals do their best work on a relatively clean signal, which is why they come after compression but before any effects that add texture or time to the sound.
The order among multiple drive pedals matters too. Many players run an overdrive before a distortion pedal, using the overdrive to push the distortion into heavier saturation; guitarists often call this technique "stacking" pedals. Fuzz pedals are a special case: many vintage fuzz designs are sensitive to the impedance of whatever precedes them, and they often sound best placed directly after the guitar rather than after a buffer or another pedal. For example, moving a vintage-style fuzz pedal to the very front of the chain, ahead of a buffered tuner, changes its character enough that many players consider it non-negotiable. Experimentation is always worthwhile.
Modulation Effects
Modulation effects, chorus, flanger, phaser, tremolo, and vibrato, come after drive pedals in the standard chain. These effects add movement and harmonic variation to the signal by creating multiple copies of it and manipulating their pitch, phase, or time relationship. When modulation sits after drive, it works on the fully distorted tone, which produces lush, swirling textures.
Placing modulation before drive changes the character dramatically: the drive then clips the already moving signal, which can produce interesting textures but often sounds more chaotic and harder to control. Phaser before overdrive is one exception players often use intentionally for a specific, raw quality. Interestingly, the general principle, modulation after drive, works as a starting point, not an absolute rule.
Time-Based Effects: Delay and Reverb
Delay and reverb come last in the signal chain. These effects create copies or reflections of the input signal and mix them back in: delay as distinct repeats, reverb as a dense wash of early reflections and late decay that simulates acoustic space. Both work best placed after all your other processing, so the delays and reverb tails reflect the fully shaped, complete sound.
If you place delay before your drive pedal, each delay repeat passes back through the drive circuit, which distorts it again; the repeats degrade with each echo, which can quickly turn into a muddy mess. Reverb before drive causes a similar problem: the drive clips the reverb's lush tail and collapses the sense of space. Delay and reverb last stands as one of the most consistent rules in signal chain practice.
The Effects Loop and When to Break the Rules
Many guitar amplifiers include an effects loop, a send and return circuit located after the amp's preamp stage but before the power amp. Inserting time based effects (delay and reverb) in the effects loop rather than in front of the amp means those effects process the preamp's output directly. This matters a lot when you push the amp itself into natural overdrive: your delay repeats stay clean and distinct instead of the preamp clipping them.
All of these guidelines exist to be broken. Guitarists have built signature sounds by deliberately inverting the standard order: putting reverb before fuzz for a washed, atmospheric quality, or running a wah pedal after an overdrive for a sharper, more dramatic filter sweep. The standard order is the right place to start because it works reliably. Once you understand why it works, you have what you need to deviate intentionally and musically instead of accidentally.
